Jacob's Story: A case of Oppositional Defiant Disorder
~ Jacob is a 5th grader who has trouble taking direction and responding to authority. Many times Jacob will challenge his teacher when he is given a simple direction or reminded to stay on task. He attempts to engage his teachers and other figures of authority in back and forth arguments over even the simplest of matters. His teachers and parents have noticed that he is continuously negative and tends to have a pessimistic outlook on daily situations. He has also recently been exhibiting some signs of depression. When interacting with other children, Jacob's teachers have noticed that he goes out of his way to disrupt or irritate fellow classmates in the attempt to engage in confrontation.
~Jacob's behavior is consistent with the symptoms associated with Oppositional Defiant Disorder. His parents and teachers must maintain the utmost patience when finding direct and efficient ways to limit such behavior, and to respond to Jacob in ways that do not provoke such argumentation.
